ABOUT BLACKBROOK SURGERY

About our Surgery

The partners moved to our present purpose built premises in 1985.  Our surgery is a single story building with easy disabled access.  The expansion of the practice led to the building of an extension in 1991.  This we financed by selling land to a dentist and building a pharmacy on site.

The premises at present include eleven doctors consulting rooms. Two which were recently put in during the surgery development. We also have a large treatment room, and four smaller clinical rooms. We've also been able to allocate a specific room for counselling, also part of our redevelopment.

We have a large patient waiting area and offices for the practice manager, computer staff, the secretaries and reception staff. Our health visitors and district nurses have separate offices and we have a reasonably sized meeting room and a well used staff lounge.

List Size: 10,000 average

The practice is located in the south east of Taunton about a mile from the thriving town centre. It is on a bus route and located next door to the West Country Ambulance Station.

Approximately 10% of the practice population live in rural areas and do not have any specific health needs. Half of the remainder lives in well-established owner occupied properties; the majority of these families have school-age children. Most of the remaining patients live in a large local council estate, which is one of the most deprived areas in Somerset. This latter group has greater medical and social needs. There are no large ethnic sub-groups in Taunton.

Surgery Developments

We have recently redeveloped our surgery which has allowed us to add in two new doctor consulting rooms, a counselling room and a revamped patient waiting area. The two new consulting rooms now allow us to give our GP registrars a permanent basis to see their patients.

The reception area will be the most notable different for the patients. We've now added a reception desk in the main waiting area, which will allow patients to check in, pick up forms and leaflets, and make general enquiries. There is also a new self check in system installed in the practice. This enables patients to book themselves in when coming to see their doctor.
